    Morning aches and pains

Did you wake up one morning with sharp, stabbing pain in your heel? This is a complaint we often hear at Dr. George Bochi’s Podiatric Clinic.

Morning heel pain is a very common issue and most often occurs in people with plantar fasciitis and other types of heel conditions. The pain typically happens as soon as you get up and can last anywhere from a minute or two to half an hour. It can also occur after sitting for a long period.

Morning heel pain is a sign that you may have inflammation in your heel caused by plantar fasciitis or another heel condition. Our goal in treatment is to determine the precise cause of your heel pain and then develop a treatment plan that addresses the problem, relieves your pain, and prevents recurrence. Our treatment plans are based on ongoing review of medical literature and our accumulated experience. We can usually treat even the most chronic cases of heel pain, even if you’ve seen multiple other doctors. Almost all heel pain can be treated conservatively, and surgery is almost never necessary. If you are experiencing heel pain, schedule an appointment today and come see us at Dr. George Bochi’s Podiatric Clinic.

What are the causes of morning heel pain?

Plantar fasciitis and many other heel conditions are caused by damage to the tissues surrounding the heel. This type of damage leads to inflammation.

When you walk during the day, your muscles contract, and the pressure from the ground presses on your heels, acting like a kind of massage that helps prevent inflammation in the heel. But when you lie down at night or sit for a while during the day, you stop this “massage” that helps prevent inflammation. The inflammation increases, and when you get up, you feel a sharp pain in the heel due to the inflammatory exudate that has accumulated in the area. Then, after walking for a few minutes, the inflammatory exudate is drained from the area, and you feel better (at least for a while).
